Science & Origin of Amber
Amber, often referred to as Copal, is a botanical tree resin rich in hydrocarbons. Unlike crystals, Amber is organic, formed from trees that existed 40 to 120 million years ago. The oldest known piece, dating back 320 million years, was discovered in an Illinois coal mine in 2009. Major deposits are found in the Baltic region, western Asia, Königsberg (Russia), Northern Myanmar, Western Ukraine, and the Dominican Republic. Russia accounts for over 90% of extractable Amber, often found washed up on shorelines. Amber typically appears in a golden hue but can also be deep black, grey, or blue. Historically, it was known as Lyncurius due to its resemblance to the solidified urine of a lynx.
History of Amber
Amber is one of the earliest substances used by humans, with evidence dating back to the Neolithic era (12,000 years ago). Mentioned in historical texts like Homer's "The Odyssey," Amber has been used in jewelry, amulets, and trinkets for healing and warding off negative energies. Ancient civilizations, including Egyptians, Indians, and Asians, valued Amber for its medicinal properties. In traditional Chinese medicine, Amber is believed to treat various ailments, including epilepsy and blood disorders, often ground into a powder for ingestion.
Insects Within Amber
Amber sometimes contains ancient insects, animals, or plant matter, providing valuable insights into prehistoric life. These inclusions help researchers study extinct species, with over 1,300 species discovered in Burmese Amber from Myanmar.
Amber vs. Copal
Copal is a resin from the Protium Copal tree in Central America and the Hymenaea Verrucosa tree in East Africa. Used medicinally and in jewelry during the European Middle Ages, Copal was also burned as incense by ancient Mayans. Recent studies suggest Copal has anti-anxiety effects. Amber, due to its age, has a rich, dark golden hue, while Copal is lighter and can appear colorless.
Meaning & Energy
Amber resonates with the solar plexus and sacral chakras, enhancing intuition and emotional expression. It stimulates personal growth and helps channel one's inner being. Meditating with Amber can induce rapid internal development, harnessing the ancient, potent life-force energy it contains. This stone is particularly beneficial during workouts or gym sessions, enhancing vitality and focus.
